Logitech killing Vid video calling, offering free camera to Revue users
Logitech Revue users have been through quite a bit of hassles with their discontinued Google TV. Sadly, things won’t get better for those who still don’t want to upgrade and Logitech has made that clear. Starting July 1st, 2013 Logitech will no longer support Vid video calling, which is a huge problem for some Revue users.
Logitech is recommending we switch to “better” services like Skype. This is great for those who use other cameras, but it is not an option for Logitech TV Cam for Revue owners. This specific camera only works with Logitech’s Vid video calling on the Logitech Revue.
The manufacturer is not abandoning you, though. In fact, they have been great at keeping the Revue (kind of) alive, considering the product has been discontinued. Logitech is offering a free replacement web cam for those with the Logitech TV Cam for Revue. You can either get a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 for desktop or a Logitech TV Cam HD (works on your tv, but not with the Revue and can only access Skype).
Pretty sweet deal if you ask us, especially for a product that has long been axed. It’s very nice of Logitech to at least offer a free alternative to those who previously paid for the Logitech TV Cam for Revue.
Check out Logitech’s official post for information on how to request your web cam exchange. There are deadlines, though. You must fill out the form by September 5th. Logitech will send you a shipping label after that and you have to send your old camera before September 27, 2013. We believe those are some reasonable dates, leaving you a pretty big window between Vid video calling’s funeral and the last day to sign up for the deal.
But tell us, guys! Are any of you getting one of the two cameras as a replacement? Which one? I am kinda liking the Logitech TV Cam HD. It’s not a direct replacement, but it is getting pretty close to a good Google TV companion.
Thanks for the tip, Akira!
