Hisense aims to compete with VIZIO with its Pulse Google TV box

You may have heard of Hisense before while looking for a good deal on an HDTV. The company is known (or not very much so) for making low-end, highly affordable televisions, and now it is trying to make a name of itself by stepping into the Google TV market. In comes the Hisense Pulse, a Google TV set-top box priced at only $99.

With its price and form-factor, Hisense is clearly putting its product as a direct competitor to the VIZIO Co-Star, which has been very successful in this market. But we are a little wary about its future, as the company lacks the reputation that VIZIO has earned over the years.

When a good product from a renowned company is priced affordably (like the Co-Star), it simply looks like a hell of a deal for the general consumer. But users are much more reluctant toward purchasing affordable devices from companies with a less prominent reputation. They may think they are cheap, just like everything else the company makes (and cheap is not the same as affordable).

We still have no information about the specs packed inside the Hisense Pulse, but it is very likely it competes well with the VIZIO Co-Star. We also don’t know if this will be compatible with the popular game streaming service – Onlive. It is definitely likely, though, at least if Hisense wants to stay on the loop.

Aside from all doubts, some say the best option is the one that is available. The VIZIO Co-Star has been flying off the shelves, so many of us haven’t been able to even pre-order one. If Hisense starts hitting the stores without supply problems, many customers might just go for it. Would you?

The Hisense Pulse with Google TV features various connectivity options, including HDMI input and output, USB, Ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi. Also included in the box is a double sided remote control featuring a built-in touchpad and dedicated Netflix button on one side and a QWERTY keyboard on the other side allowing easy web and search features. The Hisense Pulse with Google TV takes up very little space (4.5″ square x 1.4″ tall), and weighs in at just 1.5 pounds. Power consumption is only 20 watts while operating, and less than 1 watt during standby mode.
