Google Working on Voice Controls for Google TV

Ever since a little something called “Siri” came along voice controls have gotten much more popular. But who has had voice controls baked into their OS for quite some time already? Google has with Android, and now they are working on making an even better voice control service for Google TV.

Around the time that Apple was unveiling the iPhone 4S Google was submitting a patent for a Google TV remote/application. The remote/app will allow users to speak to their remote or smartphone and send commands or inquiries to their television. For example, the image above features a man asking when Seinfeld is on. This is a common thing people ask one another, and the usual response is looking in the TV guide or navigating the TV’s built in guide. In this example the TV simply responds to your voice inquiry with a list of the next Seinfeld episodes.

There is a lot of other stuff included in the patent request. Google mentions a cloud storage system that would allow multiple devices to sign in and be synced, similar to Apple’s iCloud. They also mention trigger words for the voice controls, similar to how the Xbox Dashboard works. You can find all the gritty details here.
